Job Summary

The Lowell Bennion Community Engagement Center at the University of Utah is an international leader in community engagement and public service. The Bennion Center inspires and mobilizes people to strengthen communities through learning, scholarship, and advocacy. Our curricular and co-curricular programs, initiatives, and events provide dynamic and compelling opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and community partners to collaborate on issues and projects that improve health, quality of life, and foster justice in the community, while educating students about their civic and social responsibilities. In 2020, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning classified the University of Utah as a Community Engaged Institution . The Bennion Center is a critical part of the University’s experiential and educational strategy and serves as a hub for campus-wide community engagement efforts.

The objective of the Utah Reads program is to promote educational success by advancing the reading skills of elementary-aged schoolchildren who have been identified as needing literacy assistance. To achieve this goal, the Student Services Manager must be an organized and committed professional who excels at recruiting qualified colleges students, providing comprehensive trainings, developing student leadership, and foster mutually beneficial community partnerships.

The Student Services Manager will recruit, train, and supervise a corps of college student mentors and tutors who will strengthen reading skills among school-aged children throughout the community. The Program Manager will lead a team of tutors- including AmeriCorps members- and manage performance outcomes.

The Student Services Manager is part of a dynamic and interconnected team of staff and students, and reports directly to the Associate Director for Student Engagement and Outreach. The Student Services Manager is also expected to participate and engage as an active member of Bennion Center and campus-wide committees, task forces, and work groups as necessary and/or requested.

Responsibilities

Program Administration and Management

  • Serve as the liaison to and relationship manager with the University of Utah Reading Clinic, Utah Higher Education AmeriCorps Network, Financial Aid, and Human Resources (as related to Utah Reads tutors & coordinators)

  • Recruit, onboard, and supervise a team of work-study reading and math tutors at partnership schools and community agencies

  • Utilize University of Utah platforms for hiring, management, and off-boarding

  • Establish, build, and assess relationships with Community Partners (schools & community sites) regarding programs and annual goals

  • Identify reading-related needs of partners and work with the volunteer coordinator, principal, faculty, and/or literacy specialist at tutoring sites to identify ways in which those needs may be met by the Utah Reads program

  • Manage and report all programmatic financial matters: budgets, revenue, expenses, receipts, etc.

  • Complete bi-monthly payroll for all tutors

  • Work with the Office of Financial Aid to strengthen tutor recruitment strategies

  • Provide administrative management for programs in employee’s portfolio – maintain records, metrics, and evaluation/assessment information. Create reports as necessary

  • Records include (but are not limited to): contact records, risk & liability forms, memorandums of understanding, etc.

  • Maintain accurate personnel records in all University systems

  • Implement assessment strategies (Bennion Center-wide and program specific as necessary)

  • Represent the Bennion Center across campus and in the community

  • Assist in the planning, logistics, and implementation of orientations, retreats, recognition events, and reflection opportunities for the Bennion Center

Student Development and Leadership

  • Develop and deliver effective training for student tutors in partnership with the community partners

  • Support the student Site Coordinators by providing professional and administrative training and continual assistance with program issues and development

  • Build a strong team of Site Coordinators and create a community of practitioners to share best practices and support one another

  • Ensure that tutors feel connected to the Bennion Center and are aware of additional opportunities offered through the Center.

  • Encourage, educate, and mentor students in the development of their civic competencies, leadership skills, and professional skills.

Program Development/ Training

  • Assess and evaluate program effectiveness and success

  • Identify literacy resources that strengthen the Utah Reads Program.

  • Stay current on literacy research, new knowledge, and techniques to enhance program.

  • Work with the University of Utah Reading Clinic to provide quality and effective tutoring strategies.

  • Enrich site coordinator trainings to improve tutor management, program vision, and a supportive site coordinator team.

AmeriCorps Management

  • Serve as the Bennion Center’s Campus Coordinator to the Utah Higher Education AmeriCorps Network ( UHEAN )

  • Recruit, enroll, supervise, and exit Bennion Center students as AmeriCorps members.

  • Actively recruit Bennion Center students to AmeriCorps membership

  • Educate and support AmeriCorps alums in obtaining their education stipend with the University of Utah’s office of Income Accounting and Student Loan Services

  • Support site supervisors to ensure AmeriCorps administrative compliance as necessary.

Bennion Center – General

  • Adhere to and foster the Bennion Center’s values of hope, integrity, collaboration, and action in all professional and programmatic matters

  • Represent the Bennion Center across campus and in the community

  • Assist in the planning, logistics, and implementation of orientations, retreats, recognition events, and reflection

  • May be asked to participate in the instruction of BENN courses as necessary

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

  • Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of hiring department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to Bennion Center and Student Affairs leadership. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department.

  • Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
